Love Your Resistance... and Let It Go

Think of a time this past week when you felt an impulse to do something — make a phone call, write a thank you note, exercise, meditate, whatever — but you did not take that action. What was the action that wanted to flow through you?

What was your resistance to the action? How did the resistance show itself? Was it “ I don’t have time?” Or “This won’t work?” What was it that kept you from acting on your impulse?

You have now identified what coaches call a “gremlin” — a charming saboteur. Give that saboteur a nice big kiss or hug. Love it. Don’t resist it. (Resisting resistance creates… you guessed it: resistance!) That’s not the way out. Try lovingkindness. Say “Thank you, saboteur. I am so glad to recognize you.” Then take a deep breath, and let that saboteur go. Assign it a new task, so you can get on with yours.
