Befriending Fear

Fear is useful. It warns us of danger. It asks us to be scrupulous, awake and vigilant. It does not say, “Do not act.” In fact, it may demand action. At its core, what fear really says is, “Be mindful and take right action.”

When my coaching clients assert they need to eliminate or overcome their fear before they can attempt the thing they dream of, I assert that what they need is courage, not the absence of fear. A good plan helps, too.

If you’re holding yourself back from your dream because of fear, there may be good reasons for that. Find out what those reasons are. And respond to those reasons, point by point. That’s the foundation of your dream-realizing action plan. Thank your fear for giving you the information needed to draft your plan.

While you’re working on your plan, begin to stoke the fire in your heart. The French word for heart, coeur, is the etymological root of the word courage. Cultivate your courage. Breathe passion into your dream and let that burn bright. Let it be like a lantern in your heart. Use it to light the path toward your dream, following the plan that was informed by your fear.

I bow to the value of all of our emotions.
